Betsey Johnson
Spring 2009 Collection
In times of harsh realities, it's often the wise designer who offers a place to escape. Such is the perenial way of Betsey Johnson, whose whimisical clothing are never for the woman who takes herself and her sense of style too seriously. For the spring season Johnson was consistent with her design message of delivering childlike fantasy to a grown-up crowd. Influenced by the birth of a new granddaughter, the infamous carthwheeler of a certain age (try 50-plus), took us to a land of oz; Peter Pan and disappearing rabbits. Models wore candy cane-colored hoop dresses (think turn of century); sex-pop corsets; ruched bathing suits; jodphurs and tie-dyed maxi dresses in a variety of small print florals or solid black and white. It was a wacky mix that she promised would be adjusted for retail. But until then, we can all just dream a little.
