About Maya Azucena:
Visit: Mayaazucena.com
Brooklyn singer/songwriter Maya Azucena believes that music is a tool for healing and activism, and supports humanitarian causes with her voice. Recently a Grammy winner for her duet on Stephen Marley’s “Reggae Album of the Year,” named Best Alternative Artist by AllHipHop.com, winner for three awards including Best Female Vocal in the international competition for ABC Radio Network’s Fame Games EFFIGY Awards, and two-time nominee for Best Female Vocalist of the Year at the Reader’s Choice Soul Tracks Awards; Azucena has shared bills with an impressive list of new and legendary artists such as Roberta Flack, Roy Ayers, Vernon Reid, Stephen Marley, Joss Stone, Leon Ware, Nona Hendryx, Richard Bona, J*Davey, Jaguar Wright, Bilal, Lupe Fiasco, Big Daddy Kane, Immortal Technique, Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight, Mayer Hawthorne, Anthony Hamilton, Platinum Pied Pipers, and John Legend. Among many, many benefits, Maya sang on Washington DC's historic Mall at the Save Darfur Rally against genocide in the Sudan, in solidarity with national activists and celebrities such as Barack Obama, Al Sharpton, John Prendergast, Russell Simmons and George Clooney. She has toured extensively in the U.S., as well as throughout Europe and Croatia where her recording collaboration with Croatian super star, Gibonni, garnered two Croatian Grammys.
Maya was commissioned to write two original songs for IFC documentary Lockdown USA; has contributed music to Emmy-winning UN documentarian Lisa Russell’s latest film “Not Yet Rain,” regarding the advancement of Women’s Health laws and reproductive rights in Ethiopia; was invited two years in a row to be the official post-race entertainment at the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure in NYC's Central Park; and produced Hope Night, a concert night of domestic abuse awareness which brought together four nonprofit organizations, and included NY's Governor David Paterson as a one of the speakers. Maya and “Hope Night” earned a Proclamation from the House of Representatives. Her most recent production, Dance For Brooklyn brought together a community of Brooklyn dancers and artisans with her band, and was attended by Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, who announced the show.
In the Spring of 2008, Maya and her band did a 5-week US State Department-sponsored tour of Burma, China, Philippines and Sri Lanka, as part of The Rhythm Road/American Music Abroad program, and another US State department sponsored tour of Honduras and El Salvador in November 2009, at the direct invitation of the US Embassies. Maya and her group did concerts, national press, as well as music workshops in an effort to create cultural exchange. Based upon tours of this nature, Maya was invited by The White Housein early January to a breakfast celebrating the Global Cultural Initiative. Most recently, Maya has partnered with Emmy-winning director, Lisa Russell, on a campaign to raise greater awareness and resources for worldwide Women’s Health. They will found an interactive website that brings international artists and relevant creative content together with activists in local communities, in support of the cause. The site, www.MDGFive.com, reflects an initiative by the UN to improve eight major points of poverty known as the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), maternal health being MDG #5.
As Performing Songwriter Magazine puts it: "Maya Who?! won't be a question people ask for long."
