Felix Rey Ikat

Holiday It Clutch

Image
We love Felix Rey's clutches and bags! So when we saw a preview of their holiday clutches, done in Ikat, a form of weaving that dyes threads before they are woven into fabric, we squealed with delight. Can't you just picture any one of these bags on your arm with you sporting a monotone outfit? A conversation piece if we ever saw one. Marissa Ikat clutch, $350. Available at select Nordstroms.

"Ella" by Joanne Borgella

cimg0598.jpgThere is no question that former American Idol contestant Joanne Borgella can sing. We know this because the ultimate authorities of talent—Simon, Randy, and Paula seem to think so. And, it's also no surprise to find out that the plus-size beauty is also a successful Wilehmina model with a national Ashley Stewart ad campaign. But upon hearing about the launch of her new jewelry collection, "Ella" by J. Borgella, I thought, "Great! Just what we need —another celebrity endorsed jewelry line!" Needless to say, I met the news with skepticism. So imagine my surprise when Borgella told me that all the pieces in the "Ella" collection were designed and handcrafted by her.
I'm equally excited about the collection itself.

"Ella"  features over-the-top cocktail rings of massive proportions that are sure to make for great conversational pieces at cocktail parties. Colorful over-sized pendants made of jade and other semi-precious stones are strung onto gold link-chain necklaces. The collection, "made with a lot of love" says Borgella, is made up of big, fun pieces. Many guests at the Tuesday night rooftop launch party, which was hosted at her home, loved the jewelry as well. "It's very Versace with a touch of Chanel" says a guest referring to Ella's  large-flat-faced button style rings. Ella by J. Borgella will be available for purchase at theellacollection.com.

The larger than life collection has already caught the attention of celebrity designers of Heatherette. We spotted Richie Rich of the fashion duo at the party. Rich says he "loves the jewelry." Apparently, so much that "Ella" jewelry will be worn by the models in upcoming Heatherette fashion shows. And of course, Borgella will be walking in the shows.

Spring 2009 Collections

New York Collections

vivica-fox_spring2009.jpgFashion Week officially kicked off today and we're excited to see old friends, cover the shows and see which trends trickled down from fall. On the schedule today was BCBG; B. Michael, Nicole Miller and Perry Ellis.

We spied Vivica Fox and Philip Bloch at the BCBG show. She was wearing an odd Red jacket and big black flower, which actually made her look more matronly than Glam Goddess. Perhaps they were going with the rock the vote, first-lady kind of theme of Mercedes Benz.  But she is and always is, lovely.

We will see if models of color make a comeback with our American designers this season, and of course, will give keep you in the loop. Do you think Vivica nailed it? Or did she take the theme too literally?

Obama '08 Fundraiser Goes Green

Hosted by Author, Erika Kendrick

erika_kendrick_(host,_author_random_house),_nikki_doughty_(ceo,_mulitmixx),_tamara_tunie_(law_&_order)_and_karen_abdul_(mtv).jpgPolitics met high fashion at NYC's M1-5 lounge in late July! Celebs and fashionistas alike came out in droves to support the Obama '08 election campaign. The fundraiser and designer clothing swap, organized by Steelpetal Media's Maureen Martin and Consuela Nance, was planned with a "Go Green" theme.

The fundraiser's "Green" designer clothing swap was held in honor of Michelle Obama. Michelle was recently throned 2008's "IT GIRL" by Vogue magazine because of her newly found fashion icon status.

On the campaign trail Barack Obama has been a strong promoter of "Green" technologies and fuel efficiency. In 2007, he stood before automobile makers in Detroit and told them "they had to change their ways," calling on the companies and private citizens to do their part to ensure a healthy environment for the next generation.

At last week's fashionable fundraiser, Obama supporters answered that call! Party attendees got the opportunity to help protect the environment by recycling their designer garbs. The swap included high-end labels from Roberto Cavalli, Betsey Johnson to DKNY. While guests swapped and shopped, the featured performer, jazz violinist Kersten Stevens, moved the crowd with "Shabach," a single off of her latest album Walks of Faith.

kersten stevens, featured performer.jpgConfessions of a Rookie Cheerleader author and former Chicago Bulls cheerleader, Erika Kendrick, played host to the chic Obama supporters for the night. Guest were able to give financial support to the Obama '08 campaign as well as recognize Michelle Obama's efforts on the campaign trail. "I wanted to give intelligent fashionable women an opportunity to support an icon that is about the same thing," explains Kendrick. "Michelle is relatable and makes no apologies for her glam status. She is a fabulous, beautiful, African-American icon that transcends race," adds the fashionable author.

Fellow fashionista and environmental economist Pamela Peeters co-hosted the night's activities and swapped a skin-tight couture Claude Montana dress for a flirty floral print Betsey Johnson one. Pamela both recognizes and supports Obama's green environmental policies. "He makes us believe in ourselves and that's why we love Obama," says Peeters.

Celebrity Obama supporter, actress/producer/director Tamara Tunie donated a Carmen Marc Valvo cocktail dress to the cause but opted not to participate in the swap. Tunie, who we've watched on Law & Order: SVU since 2000, admits to being one of the first Obama supporters, "even before he officially announced his presidential candidacy" in February of 2007.

michelle obama event.jpgEbonni Bryant, another enthused Obama supporter, was happy to attend the fundraiser and be able to donate to the Obama campaign. Bryant found it "fascinating that even though [Obama] has not won yet, [Michelle] is seen as a style icon."

Actress Linda Bothwell-Murphy swappedpink satin Judith Leiber booties and Roberto Cavalli jeans for a black lace cocktail dress and a faux fur vest. "I think that [Michelle] is an effortless beauty. Style is part of her nature, she doesn't need a designer to dictate what she should wear and I don't think she's afraid to be sexy," says Bothwell -Murphy. "Together both [Barack] and Michelle can move the country forward like JFK and Jackie."

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Obama '08 election campaign.

The Black Models of DSquared2

Back to Black?

00440m.jpgWith a few women's resort shows still trickling in, it would be easy to miss the men’s shows taking place right now in Milan. The one causing the most buzz, however, is DSquared2. It seems the design duo behind the Italian brand had Harlem and hip-hop in mind when they crafted this relaxed collection, even taking time to craft the set as the universal symbol of the black men’s universe—the barbershop. It was against this backdrop that a lineup of mostly black (and mostly ethnic) models strutted, led by veteran male model and sex-symbol, Tyson Beckford. While the clothes themselves were beautiful adaptations of the high-style urban look often seen on those like Kanye West or Terrance Howard, it was truly the men themselves that stood out as the most appealing aspect.

If rumors are to be believed, French label Lanvin's menswear show will be the next major designer to take a concerted effort to diversify the runway. We certainly hope this "trend" appears at the women’s show shortly after, but we also hope that it sticks, doesn’t become a PR stunt, and actually allows some very talented models to get their shot.

First the all-black issue of Italian Vogue, now the world of runway. Can it be that fashion is actually turning back to black?
