We laud it today as a style statement made popular by Jackie-O's infamous oversized version and Tom Cruise's pilot pair. But it was members of the Chinese courts who invented the drama of hiding behind tinted glass. During the 1300s, Chinese judges used dark-colored rose quartz glass to conceal their emotions while they listened to reason. By 1930, when Foster Grant sold his first pair of sunglasses on the boardwalk of Atlantic City, a new form of style had been born. Ray-Bans followed shortly thereafter to help aviators. But it wasn't until the 1906s when an advertisement by Foster Grant, followed by designers creating their own versions during the 1970s, that the world realized how utterly chic it was to cover up. And as the styles have evolved over each decade, they've produced a high level of choices for the discriminating eye.
