WHAT EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW, FIRST

With the recent passing of Kanye West's mother, Donda West, and the developing articles written about the possible circumstances, I wanted to firsts offer my condolences to Kanye and his family. Second, I wanted to clarify some possible misconceptions about plastic surgery by answering a few questions that have come in.

Q: What type(s) of health condition(s) would prevent a tummy tuck or breast reduction from occurring?

Major medical condition such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, chronic lung disease, immunodeficiency, clotting tendency and other chronic illnesses, would put a patient a risk for anesthesia and the immediate post operative period.

Q: Does age play a role?

Complications from elective surgery can occur at any age.  Most patients over 40 are required to have medical clearance for surgery that usually consists of blood work, chest x-ray and an EKG, along with a medical doctor's opinion of the overall patient's risk for surgery.

Q: How is it possible that the doctor who did perform the surgery not know of her health condition?

While I cannot speculate on what occurred between patient and doctor, I can say that unfortunately many patients try to down play serious medical conditions in hope of finding a doctor who is willing to perform the procedure they desire. Patients will often go to more than one consultation and if they are turned down for surgery due to a medical condition it is possible that they will not bring it up in the next consultation.  It is important to be honest and forthcoming about your health status and any medications or drugs that you may be using.

Q: What are the essentials every woman should know before have plastic surgery?

-Research and screen several surgeons before selecting one.  It is a good idea to discuss their experience with various procedure(s) and techniques, options that might yield your desired results and your expectations.
-Find out if your potential surgeon:
 Has five or more years of surgical training and at least two years of plastic surgery training
 Operates in an accredited surgical facilities such as a hospital or an office certified by the American Association for Accreditation for Ambulatory Surgery Facilities.
