Growing up, Liz Caldas, a 30-something professional from New York City, always knew there was a fifty-fifty chance she’d experience hair problems. “Hair thinning and loss are prevalent in my family, and stress can further exacerbate these issues,” explains Caldas, who started “losing clumps of hair in the shower, followed by slight balding at the front of my head,” a few years ago. Yet instead of seeking costly professional treatments—“hair replacement just seemed too dramatic and expensive”–as a quick fix, she opted to go the holistic route. She researched symptoms and solutions online and found two common threads for a cure: flax seed oil and vitamin B. The former is an essential dietary supplement that provides Omega-3 fatty acids, known for its promotion of cardiovascular health, the treatment of dry-skin conditions, such as eczema, and the improvement of the appearance of hair and skin.
