When it comes to our hair, one texture does not fit all: Women from the African Diaspora have a wide range of hair textures, and hair professionals will tell you, it's not unusual for you to have one, two, even three textures on your head. Our textures range from wavy to curly to coily--and any one of them can be either fine, medium or thick. Believe it or not, having a crown that's more curly or wavy, while the nape and sides might be coily and curly, is pretty common. It's a discovery that women who do the big chop find out when they begin their return to roots journey.
How can you tell what texture you have--even if your hair isn't "natural"? "Wet it," says celebrity hairstylist, Q. "When you're hair is wet is when you can see its true texture; you can look at the roots and see its curl pattern. Is it wavy, does it have a zig-zag, is it springy? All represent different textures we're naturally born with.
So use our easy-to-follow guide, designed to help you recognize the most common hair textures native to African American, African, Caribbean and Latina/black women.
