The always fashionable First Lady appears in the magazine alongside other heavy hitters like Oprah and Shonda Rimes, who rank amongst the magazine's most influential Black women of 2011.
Reflecting on her journey to the top, Michelle told the magazine: “My story to young people around this country and around the world is: Don’t look at me as the First Lady first; look at me as Michelle Obama, a girl who grew up on the South Side of Chicago. Because I was there, and this is attainable. There is no magic to this. It is hard work….” She also voices her continued commitment to use her influence and the "big, bright light" of her First Lady position to help support women and girls globally.
