Is Lynn Nottage's Play Broadway Bound?

Posted on May 2, 2012 By admin

"By the Way, Meet Vera Stark," the intelligently witty dramatic comedy by Pulizter-prize playwright Lynn Nottage, might see itself on the Great White Way in 2012.

If you didn't catch "By the Way Meet Vera Stark,"earlier this year during its off-Broadway run, you might get a chance to see it revived on Broadway. Sources say the the production has been optioned and is currently seeking investors. Attention Beyonce, Jada, Jill, even Oprah—this is your chance to bring this play to life!

The story takes you through at least four time periods (specifically, 70-years) via fictional character Vera Stark, a headstrong African-American maid and budding actress and her tangled relationship with her boss, a white Hollywood star desperately grasping to hold on to her career. When circumstances collide and both women land roles in the same Southern epic, the story behind the cameras leaves Vera with a surprising and controversial legacy scholars will debate for years to come.

The narrative takes you through several twists and turns--from "passing" in order to make it in Hollywood to the neurosis thespians have about holding on to their spot at the top. Using pragmatic comedy, the story uncovers so many of the same topics women of color in the entertainment industry are faced with today in such a remarkably candid, hilarious and intelligent way that it's a must-see.

And if they do bring it to Broadway, we definitely want the same cast (Sanaa Lathan, Stephanie J. Block, Karen Olivo, Kevin Isola and the remarkable Kimberly Herbert Gregory). Below a peek, enjoy!
