We celebrate the beauty of the first supermodel mogul, Naomi Sims.

Unfortunately while her appearance in the Sunday Times turned heads, it didn't exactly break down barriers and agencies still didn't want to sign her. So once again, Naomi didn't accept their version of her truth. She contacted Wilhelmina Cooper a former model who was forming her own agency at the time and offered her a deal: Naomi would print up cards using the tear sheets from The New York Times, send them out to advertising agencies with Wilhelmina's contact info. And if they called to book her Wilhelmina would get the commission. It worked. Within a year Naomi became a top-selling model, earning $1000 a week.

Throughout her career Naomi appeared on many magazine covers, numerous advertisements and broke down barriers. She retired from modeling in 1973 to start her own beauty business and became a multimillionaire as the owner of the Naomi Sims Wig collection, makeup line and author of several books about modeling, brown beauty and skincare. Here, she graces the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine.
