Get the Look: Kerry Washington

Posted on May 2, 2012 By admin

Actress Kerry Washington shined at the Black Ball fundraiser. Makeup artist Lucky Smyler shares how you can get her look at home.

For Kerry's effortless makeup at the Black Ball, the annual fundraiser for Alicia Keys' Keep A Child Alive foundation, makeup artist Lucky Smyler wanted to create a look that was ethereal—a perfect complement to the fairytale-like dress Kerry wore that evening.

Step 1: Prep the Skin
"Kerry's skin is naturally flawless, therefore my job was to enhance what was already there," shares Lucky, who also counts Viola Davis as a client. The first step was to hydrate Kerry's skin before applying foundation. He used Embryolisse Crème Rich Hydratante moisturizer ($31, available at Amazon.com), then softly pressed Dior SkinFlash Primer ($42, available at Sephora.com) on top of her face. Afterward, he applied Tom Ford Traceless Foundation SPF 15 in Caramel ($78, available at Neimanmarcus.com). Next, he added some highlights to her T-zone and jawline: First he used Smashbox Halo Highlighting Wand ($32, available at Sephora.com) on the forehead, nose and cheeks, then finished the glow with Dior Original Tan Bronzer ($46, available at Sephora.com), which he used to contour Kerry's jaw line and illuminate her temples.

Step 2: The Eyes Have It

Lucky wanted to keep Kerry's eyes nude, but give them some captivating shimmer. First he swept a light wisp of Kevyn Aucoin Matte Eyeshadow in Blush ($28, available at Barneys.com) from lash line to brow bone, taking shape of the entire eye lid. Then to give the eye an extra dimension of luster, he pressed NARS Illuminator in Copacabana ($28, available at Barneys.com) over the whole eye area for an instant spot light. He added Andrea Mod individual lashes ($2, available at drugstores) for a rich lash line, then four coats of YSL Shocking Mascara in Black ($32, available at Nordstrom.com) to complete the look. His final signature? "Since it's ALWAYS about a phenomenal lash curl for me, I had to tweak the look with my Preo Japanese Eye Lash Curler ($28, available at Alconeco.com)—a must for every starlet," he says.

Step 3: A Perfectly Understated Pout

The goal, says Lucky, was to create a lip that looked natural, yet appeared special at the same time. "I had to make sure her lip color and texture remained fresh by the time she was done with all of those interviews and photo-ops that take place on the red carpet," he explains. "Sometimes lip liner and a lip brush can just be over-kill. For this look we omitted both of those for the sake of simplicity," continued Lucky. Instead, he relied on Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Tint in Amused ($24, available at Tartecosmetics.com), to ensure color stability and consistency. Then added Tom Ford Lipstick in Spanish Pink ($48, available at Neimanmarcus.com). The result? A look that was natural and effortless.
